Who are the Staffordshire Adults Autistic Society?

Founded in May 2007, we are a Staffordshire based charity that offer support to individuals aged 18 and over who are on the spectrum and to parents of children or young adults who are on the spectrum. We offer guidance to workplaces who either have employees on the spectrum or have clients who are on the spectrum. In addition to this, we hold weekly socials that are spectrum friendly for individuals on the spectrum to come along to so that they can socialise comfortably without having to ‘mask’.

Our mission statement

At Staffordshire Adults Autistic Society (SAAS), we aim to use the knowledge of those on the Autism Spectrum to aid and facilitate independent and happy lives by providing support to people on the Autism Spectrum, and to promote better understanding and acceptance of the Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Meet the Team

Chair - Salwa El-Raheb-Booth

'I joined SAAS early in 2019. In August 2019, Kevin, founder and previous Chair of SAAS decided to stand down. I was quite surprised and felt unprepared when the post of Chair was passed on to me.

I do realise that this is possibly the best move I made in a long time. I love the people I work with and the people I work for. I was made welcome and l feel really privileged. We're a very close team and have a clear united vision and mission.'

Treasurer - Ashley Keay

'I am SAAS Treasurer and I have Asperger's. I first joined SAAS two years ago to gain some work experience as I had been unemployed for some time. After a year with SAAS I was offered the opportunity to become SAAS Treasurer but my role has developed far beyond that.

Earlier this year I started my first full-time job in the finance industry. Outside of SAAS I enjoy watching football and I am a Liverpool supporter.'

Office Coordinator- Jade Starkey-Bossons

'I am SAAS’s office coordinator. My role involves everything from making sure that the office jobs run smoothly and efficiently to planning social events for our friends.

I’ve been involved with SAAS Since November 2019. My journey with SAAS began when they facilitated my “coming out” as Autistic meeting at work. This was a huge success and enabled my colleagues to understand me and my quirks. I have a BA (hons) in Music and Education, I’m a flautist, and I’m married with 9 fur-babies... Guinea Pigs!'

Trustee - Julie Kearns

'I joined SAAS 10 years ago in January 2010 as a volunteer administrator while attending Stoke-on-Trent College. Joining SAAS gave me the opportunity to gain confidence, new administrative skills and experience to help me gain employment in administration following redundancy after long term employment. I enjoy gardening, attending 50’s Rock & Roll dancing parties, attending concerts and theatre shows and dining out with friends'

Trustee - Zak Jones

'I’ve been involved with SAAS for 2 years now. I started when they did the Charity Show and got back to it when Kevin started the evening get togethers. I love Nature, Doctor Who, Star Wars, Photography, Acting, Xbox Gaming, Fantasy Worlds, Marvel and DC, Books, Legends, History, the Big Bang Theory and I also do Medieval Reenactment.

I got my Asperger’s diagnosis when I was 9, I was bullied a lot because of it and I still am bullied about it today by lots of people...'

Trustee - Andrew Robinson

'I joined SAAS around 2010 took the "Time For Change" campaign had just got started and became a Trustee. "Autism Radio UK" was not far away and I became a presenter and edited the shows ready for upload.

I have Asperger’s and really enjoy collecting old video games that I have fond memories of as a child'
